 lant Biodiversity\n\n**Speaker:** Laura Bennett-Kimble\n\nAcross the state
  of Florida\, quality of life is jeopardized by continuous\, unchecked dev
 elopment – and there are no signs it’s slowing. In an attempt to count
 er\, or mitigate\, the loss of natural habitats\, a group of FNPS voluntee
 rs and others regularly gather on pre-development sites (with proper permi
 ssions) to salvage native plants and their seeds before the bulldozers arr
 ive. Laura Bennett-Kimble is one of those volunteers\, and she’ll share 
 information on the experience\, including not only the nuts and bolts how-
 to information\, but also the more personal perspective of why she believe
 s it is essential to do this kind of work.\n\n**About the Speaker:** Laura
  Bennett-Kimble is a Florida Native Plant Society volunteer who\, with a g
 roup of other dedicated volunteers\, supports the society’s mission by r
 escuing native plants at sites slated for development\, primarily in the s
 crub and sandhills of Lake County. In 2023\, she and the other core member
 s of the plant rescue group received the FNPS Green Palmetto Award for Ser
 vice. Laura\, who is a certified Florida Master Naturalist\, has previousl
 y presented information about plant rescue work at meetings including FNPS
 ’s online Lunch ’n’ Learn programs. She’s also written about nativ
 e plants for the Florida Native Plant Society\, Florida Wildflower Foundat
 ion and other organizations. She’s served as vice president and treasure
 r for a couple FNPS chapters\, too. Laura also makes jewelry featuring her
  photos of Florida’s native plants and wildlife as a way to share – an
 d raise awareness of – the beauty and importance of the natural world su
 rrounding us. Laura and her husband\, Glenn\, live in Clermont on the side
  of a sandhill that was once a citrus grove – and where they’re steadi

 drive/\n\nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Deborah Green has been a champion in Cent
 ral Florida for habitat protection and native plants for birds\, has a Ph.
 D. in entomology and has served twenty-five years as a board member of Ora
 nge Audubon Society\, including 11 years as president. Deborah worked in C
 entral Florida as an environmental educator and served as founding Directo
 r of Sustainability for Valencia College\, all campuses\, retiring in 2014
 .  \n  \nShe was a member of the California Native Plant Society in the 19
 70s while studying entomology at U.C. Berkeley\, and after moving back to 
 her home state of Florida has been a FNPS member since the late 1980s. Fro
 m 2000 to 2005\, she had a chance to develop a series of water-wise native
  demonstration landscapes in Volusia County as well as flyers on water-wis
 e landscaping\, native xeriscape plants and invasive plants\, distributed 
 throughout Volusia County. With Tarflower collaborators\, she organized tw
 o native plant yards tours in 2015 and 2016 and\, with Wild Birds Unlimite
 d\, another tour this past October. A 2026 tour will be planned for Octobe

 \n\nPermaculture designers will discuss the importance of biodiversity wit
 h a focus on five elements to incorporate in native landscape designs.\n\n
 **About the Speakers:**\n\nChris Leibner's passion for studying and workin
 g with native flora and fauna began as a child in Lake County\, where his 
 exploration of our local lakes and forests ultimately led him to pursue de
 grees in biological and health sciences. He brings this unique combination
  of practical and scholarly expertise to every garden he designs. He also 
 loves to cook and is particularly fond of growing food he can experiment w
 ith in the kitchen. As a result\, his designs often feature a wide array o
 f edible plants. In his free time\, he also enjoys hiking\, kayaking\, and
  playing the guitar.\n\nChristie Leibner is a native Floridian. She has al
 ways loved being outside\, and she has spent the last decade studying it. 
 Her current research is focused on the impact of native gardens on birds a
 nd ways to grow your own medicinal herbs. Like Chris\, she is an educator 
 with a passion for life-long learning. She is currently planning a school 
 garden that will be entirely student led and working on her Master Natural
 ist certification. In her free time\, she enjoys hiking\, biking\, baking\
